Establishing a Habit

It takes us about a month to establish a habit, and Flylady made 31 days for these baby steps because we will miss a day or two.

And if we missed a day, then our perfectionism might get in a way telling us that these baby steps aren’t working and that we should just quit.

What I’m trying to tell you today is that nobody is perfect. Nobody has an ideal cleaning routine that they do every single day of the year with a house that stays clean 100% of the time.

We’re Not Behind!

We need to be kind to ourselves because we’re not behind. If we missed a day or two or even a week, remember this Flylady’s quote.

“We have to forget about the things we haven’t done and focus on what we can do today.”

This brings me to today’s video. Two of my kids are recovering from a cold, and I haven’t done much cleaning this past weekend.

Out of all the baby steps that we’ve been working on. I managed to do a few baby steps:

  • Made my bed.
  • Somewhat cleared the hotspots, not all of them.
  • Today was the first time I managed to wash all of the dishes and shined the sink before bed.
My hot spot area, our control zone.

Am I behind?

Well, if you came over, I definitely would have been embarrassed, but I’m still not behind.

I did exactly what I needed to do this past weekend. I took care of my kids’ needs, and that’s all that mattered. Everything else was in icing on the cake.

Did I fail at these baby steps, even though I skipped three days? No, because we’re building our habits. I’m not going to quit just because I missed three days.

What Am I Going To Do?

Today, I managed to shine my sink before bed, but I have many burning hotspots. In addition, the floor is covered with hundreds of legos, and I still need to swish and swipe both bathrooms.

But guess what I’m going to do about those baby steps? Well, I’m going straight to bed so I can finally catch up on my rest after having a few rough nights.

Then I can work on these baby steps tomorrow because I’m never behind.

I hope this blog post encourages you not to give up.
